  • What to use for foundation on buildings?

I use 3/4" particle board (Weyerhauser's Gold Edge is for outdoor use) and coat it with two coats of ElastoSeal then usually a top color coat of concrete grey. This elasticized paint is water proof. I call it "condom" construction. The base is very strong, heavy enough not to easily blow away (although to 60+ mph winds I would anchor as well) and is easy to cut and shape to hold specific buildings.

I use "DuraRock" or "Wonder Board". It's a cementitious drywall material you use in wet applications. I've seen it on several layouts here in the Northeast.

I've been using the cast concrete paver steps. These come in sized from about 8"x11" all the way up to 3'x3'. They are heavy and will NEVER blow away. I dig them into the ground so that they stick up slightly. To date I've just set my structures on them, but this WILL need to change when the Santa Ana's kick up (100+ mph at my place). They are resistant to anything and you can step on them without breaking. Also they are available in an assortment of natural colors. I like to use the smallest paver that will fit under the entire building.
