  • Best way to fertilize moss to help it grow?

    Posted by Bill Dippert (Portland (Cedar Mill), OR - USA) on March 17, 1999 at 12:41:58: 170.104.176.93 - 170.104.176.93

    Has anyone out there found a good fertilzer for moss?

    No, I am not crazy. Most people want to kill their moss, however, in my garden railway I plant mosses and want to encourage their growth as ground cover. I, at the same time, want to discourage weeds and grass in the flower beds. Hence, I would like to find a good moss fertilizer to encourage the moss to take over everything else.

    Of course, the local garden centers think that I am crazy...however, they are the ones selling mosses.

    Bill;

    Replies to a similar query posted in May, 1998, suggested using stale beer or whole milk. Bob Gibney suggested a solution of 1 part buttermilk to 8 parts water. Don't know whether any of that would kill weeds as well.

    I remember reading some time ago about using brewer's yeast. I think this was being used to help get the moss established, but I would think it would feed the moss as well. Let us know how you make out.Good LuckEd

    The gardening classes I have been taking recommened either beer or buttermilk. I have seen several gardening shows where they took chunks of moss and mixed them with a cup or two of buttermilk in a blender and then spread the mixture where they wanted it to grow. This is supposed to be a great way to propigate moss and to get it to grow on rocks and other surfaces where you want it. Just keep it moist with a spritzer of water until it gets well established. If the buttermilk acts as a growth medium I don't see what it would hurt to dilute some with water and spray it on from time to time.The use of a fertilizer may burn the delicate mosses and cause them to die

    I recently watched a program on the Discovery channel. It covered in depth, how to "plant" moss on rocks, wood, cement and pottery. The said to mix 5 parts of thinned pottery slip (the stuff you pour in pottery molds) 1 part harvested moss and 1 part FISH EMULSION (there's the fertilizer)in a blender and whip it up until it looks like thick paint. Weird, I don't think my best friend, my wife, would go along with this fish smell in our only blender. I haven't tried this yet, but it sounds like it might work--D.J.
