  • What to use for indoor scenery?

I'm leaning towards 2" thick extruded styrofoam which I sculp with a wire wheel and a drill..... Quick but messy. Still working with best material for joints...

. The 2"-3" and 4" blue board works the best. I use a hot knife to cut it and then from there everything is sculpted in drywall mud. The stuff is the best I have ever found in 30 years of doing this great hobby. I use Hydrocal for my molds of everything and then follow up with water, a brush and drywall mud. It takes stain or latex paint or ink sprays very well.

I use a very dense styrofoam that I bought at a construction supply store. It is light grey, 2" thick and is very easy to work with. For some areas I have also used the pink styro from Home Depot. After I sculpt the shape Iglue on rock castings and just brush on a thin coat of plaster. This gives the surface a harder finish and fills in all the cracks. I then finish with conventional scenery products. I used chicken grit from a feed supply store for ballast. The size and texture is perfect.

I use Taping Compound for the joints and as for styro foam I try not to use it as it is messy.I use what we call blue board it comes in different thickness and you can purchase it at Home Depot. It is very dense material that looks like styro foam and it is used for insulation.
