  • How can I make corrugated aluminum roofing?

Posted by Ed Dill, Carlisle, PA on December 07, 1998 at 11:31:15: crls-81ppp194.epix.net - 199.224.81.194

Some time ago there was a thread about making corrugated aluminum roofing with Al beer cans and a paper crimper. The beer cans had to be annealed so that the crimper would work. Also, residual paint was a problem. I found two sources of soft aluminum: baking trays(any supermarket) and embossing foil. The foil comes in 32 guage 12" X 36" (Maid-o-Metal, St Louis Crafts Inc, St Louis, MO 63111) Cost $3.70/roll including tax. Also available im copper and brass. The stuff really crimps beautifully.Ed and Roxanne Dill

There is another way to corragated roofing from the trashcan. Some cans are made from a single piece of tinplate, with the centre third corrugated for extra strength. Examples are found wrapped around chicken soup or petfood. To extract the useful bit, cut the top and bottom off the can with an opener, then using tinsnips (heavy scissors for cutting thin sheet-metal, might be sold under another name in your part of the world) cut down the seam. Tinsnips leave a nasty sharp edge so wear gloves. The management accepts no responsibility for sliced fingers! Roll the resulting sheet flat (a kitchen rolling pin will do for this job) and trim off the surplus. The stuff will solder easily but is very vulnerable to rust, so paint thoroughly! Aletnatively, plant outdoors and let it go. Before long you will have a very convincing scene of depression-era dereliction. Who needs weathering? Hope this helps.
